We look forward to seeing you.

St Johns in Burford, set right in the heart of the Cotswolds is a fine grade 1* listed building. The inside has many interesting features that have accumulated over the years since its construction began in 1175.

So not surprisingly any works to update the sound system and add an installed camera, streaming and projection system were examined in fine detail by the DAC to ensure that the impact on the aesthetics was minimal.

Being a large evangelical anglican congregation, the church decided that it was more inclusive to turn 90 degrees so that they could gather in a more relaxed theatre style layout of chairs. However for more traditional services such as funerals and remembrance Sunday they still need to be able to switch back to the original layout.

This was achieved by adding a 3rd loudspeaker, so that with a simple switch the audio orientation can be changed.

The audio system is based on our favourite Allen and Heath digital desk, offering a decent sized touch screen plus full wireless control via iPad. This is a great step up from their existing digital desk with its microscopic screen and fairly daunting control app. A 4 channel digital amplifier gave us a good choice of equalisation options, limiting and crossover adjustment allowing their existing subwoofers to be included in the new arrangement.

Two remote HD pan tilt zoom (PTZ) cameras were installed in locations which suited both church orientations, and controlled by our own ultra simple button control pad with back lit displays behind each button allowing the functions to change over various pages of options.

In addition to camera control, this unit also controls the video switching and streaming unit removing the need to understand a potentially baffling array of additional controls. So streaming to YouTube is just a matter of a single button push, with a monitor screen displaying both camera images, the outgoing image and the sound levels.

We set up the audio processing so that the sound was optomised for listening on a device with smaller speakers such as a tablet or laptop, compressing the music and speech to deliver a comfortable consistent level.

The projection scheme is yet to receive Faculty approval and will consist of two winch down screens hidden behind the arches between nave and side aisle, plus two long throw HD projectors in the opposite aisle.

On the day the system was handed over we received this message from our customer, “Trial run this afternoon with band practice. All very good and epic sound. iPad App is very easy to use and so great to be able to wander around the church with it”.

To discuss how APi Sound and Visual could assist your church with a sound and projection system, please call us on 0845 5578350 or contact us online.

The Role

You will provide installation services on a wide range of integrated Audio visual systems, designed to meet our client’s needs. As well as working on AV you will also work on control systems and network solutions.

The role will be field based however the successful candidate needs to be with easy reach of our Head Office in Exeter.

Projects are predominantly in the South of England, London, the Midlands and Wales, so the candidate must be willing and able to travel and stay away overnight when required during the week.

So when the church wanted a web streaming system installed APi was their natural choice.

The system provides a two camera streaming system with integrated switcher and streamer.  The cameras are a high definition remote pan, tilt and zoom type, one which is fitted on the gallery face and the second being mounted on a pillar with a thin strap for fixing so that DAC approval was not required.

The main benefit of these cameras is that they offer exceptional image quality even in low light, a frequent issue in many churches.

The supplied joystick remote control has a number of preset memories so that commonly used shots can be quickly recalled, with the joystick allowing fine control.

A four input switcher and combined streaming unit makes the whole process of selecting a source for the projector and stream simple and removes the need for an additional computer to perform the streaming function. The illuminated controls clearly show the current source, and also allow more advanced functions such as superimposing words over images.  The unit also doubles as a recorder and will record to a USB device.

A 22" monitor shows a 4 way split of the different input sources available to the mixer.  Finally a small microphone was positioned on top of the rood screen to pick up singing and other ambient sounds just for the streaming audio.

After installation training was provided with on-going telephone support as and when needed.

Village Halls need to offer the local community the ability to host a wide range of events, such as community cinema, planning meetings, training courses, exercise classes, dance and music concerts, and speaking events.

We have the particular technical understanding to design and specify products that bring all of the necessary functions together to cover the varied requirements of particular events. But more than this we are able to design a system that is importantly simple to operate so that hall administrators don't have to spend hours setting up and supporting bookings.

Frequently the most difficult task we have to do in our design is to be able to combine the diverse requirements of a sound system for speech and music with the very specific requirements of a surround sound system for cinema use. With that in mind we have come up with our own custom solution combining a digital mixer and surround decoder with our control system allowing the complicated stuff to happen in the background whilst offering simple user controls. We have a range of loudspeaker solutions to suit all sizes and building types leading to a neat unobtrusive appearance.

Visually we have access to all of the latest projection technology including long throw lenses and laser projectors offering low maintenace and cost of ownership.

All of these functions add value to the hall as a hub within the community and also offer an opportunity for halls to attract increased revenue.

Such installations have been completed by APi Sound & Visual at village halls in both  Woodbury and Woodbury Salterton, Ashill Cullompton, Sampford Peverill Cullompton, Victory Hall Exminster, South Molton, Kingsley Hall Westward Ho! and Roborough Winkleigh.

A recent client from a hall in North Devon commented: “What we like is your direct experience with halls and the like and understanding our needs.  No up selling, and happy to work within a budget and make pragmatic suggestions along the way.

We have ended up with a future proof quality system within our budget that focuses on what we need to do as opposed to something the engineer likes.

Also the willingness to repeatedly explain to different people who haven't been involved initially is extremely helpful for them to understand what is being done and how it works.

In short, no hesitation in recommending”.

Beckenham Methodist church is in the heart of the local community being right on the edge of the town centre.

They have had a two year building and renewal project both refurbishing the worship space and building offices and an enlarged community cafe space along one side of the original building. For our part APi have been involved in installing a simple to use 8 camera digital CCTV system, plus a full audio visual system.

We are used to working at height but usually this is in Anglican buildings so we were surprised at the 10m tower scaffold we needed to fit the screen in this project, but our engineers all have a head for heights so took it in their stride. With an install this high we had to use a special winch down unit that allows the screen case to descent 7m to the correct height for viewing. A Panasonic projector provides the images with the laser light source good for 20,000 hours there will be little need for maintenance and the low power consumption gives it a low total cost of ownership.

For the sound system we used some of our favourite products with the Allen And Heath QU-PAC for mixing, and slim high performance FBT line array loudspeakers  giving room filling sound from just 2 speakers. Professional radio microphones from JTS (all rechargeable of course) and a digital 4 channel power amplifier from DAP audio’s new range plus one of their subwoofers to fill in the low notes.

Unfortunately just as we finished the current pandemic meant that they have not had a chance to meet in the new space yet. We hope it proves a blessing when they can eventually walk back through the doors.

To save you money and the embarrassment of batteries that fail mid service, all of our systems are supplied with charging docks and rechargeable batteries.

The transmitter packs are simply slotted into the charger and left ready for the next use. You can then be confident that they wont let you down, and also be saving the environment and money. If these ever need replacement we will send you a new pair free of charge for the lifetime of the system.

Our systems are designed for the slightly lower cell voltage of rechargeables so will give a predictable 10 hours plus of service between charges, unlike other brands which should only be used with alkaline batteries.

West Clyst School has been built just outside Exeter in a large area of new housing development. With a nursery and two classes per year this is quite a substantial school to meet the growing local need.

APi has been the main AV contractor for Broadclyst Primary School (one might say the ‘parent’ school of the academy group) for many years and so was the natural choice for this project. Continuing in the vein of its highly multimedia rich forerunner, West Clyst has been designed from the ground up to give this same level of teaching experience to its new pupils.

Just walking down the corridors you are aware of the impact of digital on the building.  Each classroom has a 22’’ digital signage display at the door showing who the teacher is, samples of the children’s work and reminders to parents.  Inside both a 65’’and 55”’Philips professional display screen, combined with a digital matrix switcher allows for two separate teaching spaces. Sources available include desk top visualiser, Microsoft surface PC via a wireless collaboration link and a desktop PC. The sound system is full Dolby Digital surround and there is also an infra red soundfield system allowing the children to hear their teacher without them having to raise their voice (most of the time!).

Bringing this all together is a simple touch screen control system allowing all of the av switching to be condensed into simple intuitive button presses.

The hall is where things are taken to another level, the main display is a 5m widescreen projection system with a Canon laser projector. This ensures a consistently bright image with low energy consumption and instant on-off, useful in a school environment.

A further 86” flat screen creates a separate zone for smaller gatherings.

Sound is taken care of by a Yamaha 16 channel digital zone mixer system allowing for full surround sound which can move with the current orientation of the hall from portrait to landscape layout. This is to allow for a future second projector and screen.

For school performances and events an Allen and Heath 32 channel digital mixer and full LED theatre lighting system have been included.

Again this whole space is controlled by an iPad based touch screen system allowing control not only over the AV system but the lighting and also the 3 remote camera web streaming system allowing full recording and web broadcasting.

Thanks to the dedication of APi staff the whole project was delivered in the timescale promised.  This didn’t mean it was fully functional in time for the new students due to other building delays, but each classroom for the currently occupied years 0-3 was ready to go.

Now as I write, a few weeks into the first term everything is up and running to the delight of the staff.
